Five public school districts and ten charter schools serve the Lake Norman area. Which district your child attends depends on your county, your town, and in Mooresville's case, which side of a street you live on. This is one of the most confusing school landscapes in the Charlotte region, and it catches relocating families off guard.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS)
Mecklenburg County · 140,000+ students · ~200 schools
CMS serves Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville on the south and east shores. It is one of the largest school districts in North Carolina. Lake Norman families in Mecklenburg County fall into CMS. Three main high schools serve the lake corridor.
William A. Hough High School
Cornelius · Opened 2010 · ~2,500 students
The primary CMS high school for Cornelius and Davidson. Named after William Amos Hough Jr., a lifelong educator and former North Mecklenburg High principal. Offers 30 AP courses and consistently outperforms CMS and NC state averages on end-of-course exams (83.6% math proficiency vs. 66.6% district average). Has won multiple state championships including women's swimming and diving (6 titles), women's soccer, women's tennis, wrestling, and football (2025 8A). 73% of graduates attend four-year colleges.
North Mecklenburg High School

Founded in 1951, North Meck is the only CMS school offering three distinct magnet programs: International Baccalaureate (IB), a Technical Institute (certifications in Automotive Service, Cosmetology, and Culinary Arts), and a World Languages Academy. Awarded the 2020 Magnet School of Distinction. Served over 3,000 students at its peak in 2005-2006. Mascot: Vikings.
Hopewell High School

Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD)
Town of Mooresville only · ~6,000 students · 9 schools
MGSD is a small, independent city-only district serving addresses within the Town of Mooresville. Established in 1905, it is completely separate from Iredell-Statesville Schools despite Mooresville sitting in Iredell County.
Mooresville High School
The district's sole comprehensive high school. MGSD achieved the second-highest graduation rate in North Carolina, with over 95% of its 2025 seniors graduating. Mooresville High, Mooresville Middle, and East Mooresville Intermediate all exceeded state growth expectations in the 2023-2024 accountability report. Seven of eight tested schools earned a grade of C or better.
Pioneer in Digital Learning
MGSD gained national recognition starting in 2007 for its 1:1 laptop digital conversion initiative under Superintendent Mark Edwards. Every student received a MacBook Air, financed in part by redirecting textbook funds. The program was featured in a landmark 2012 New York Times article and has been visited by educators nationwide. MGSD is a member of the League of Innovative Schools through Digital Promise.

Best known for its Spanish Immersion Program: a full-immersion track (90% Spanish, 10% English) beginning in Kindergarten that continues through Mill Creek Middle School and Bandys High School, with the goal of producing bilingual, biliterate graduates by sixth grade.

The Mooresville school-district patchwork
This is the quirk that catches relocating families off guard. Mooresville sits entirely within Iredell County, but two separate school districts serve the city: Mooresville Graded (MGSD) and Iredell-Statesville (ISS).
Which district a child attends depends on their exact address within Mooresville. This creates a patchwork where one side of a street may be MGSD and the other ISS. The two districts have different curricula, different resources, and different reputations. For families, this matters enormously.
What this means for home buyers: Before you sign a contract in Mooresville, verify which school district serves your specific address. Do not assume. The listing agent may not know. Check the district boundary maps directly.

Charter schools are public, tuition-free schools open to all students via lottery. They are not tied to your address or school district. The Lake Norman area has some of the most competitive charter lotteries in North Carolina. Most of these schools have waitlists and receive far more applicants than seats. Apply to multiple schools and enter the lottery as early as possible.
Pine Lake Preparatory

Authorized in 2006, Pine Lake has grown into one of the highest-performing charters in North Carolina. Operates as its own school district. Features a dedicated STEM building with two Project Lead the Way tracks (Engineering and Computer Science). Most competitive charter lotteries
Lake Norman Charter, Community School of Davidson, Pine Lake Preparatory, and Lincoln Charter are generally the most competitive charter lotteries in the region. Demand far exceeds available seats. Lake Norman Charter alone receives thousands of applicants for a few hundred open spots each year. Entering the lottery early and applying to multiple schools improves your odds. Most charters hold their lotteries in the winter or early spring for the following fall. Waitlists often run deep, but families who move into the area during the summer can sometimes secure a spot from the waitlist.

Woodlawn, Davidson Day, SouthLake Christian, Liberty Prep, Lake Norman Christian, and Ambassador Christian are among the best-known private options families relocating to Lake Norman ask about. Each has a distinct academic focus, culture, and tuition structure worth researching early in the process. Davidson Day and Ambassador Christian are the highest-tuition options ($25,000+), while Liberty Prep and Hope Christian Academy offer more affordable alternatives under $8,000.
Structured vs. Montessori vs. Classical: understanding the approaches
Families moving to Lake Norman encounter several distinct educational philosophies.
